Hints of vanilla and brown sugar usually filled my kitchen on a Friday afternoon, a testament to my legendary (in my own mind) chocolate chip cookies.
As usual, I’d carefully measure the flour, add in generous amounts of butter, and even do a “quality control test” on the chocolate chips for flavor verification purposes..….. But this time when I slid the cookie sheet into “old faithful” (yep I named my wall oven), nothing happened. Absolutely nothing…..
The digital display mocked me with it’s “100°F” reading on the display panel. A temperature more suitable for a lukewarm hug rather than a golden-brown masterpiece. My cookies, destined for crispy edges and gooey centers, were fast approaching a life of doughy mediocrity.
“This is a culinary tragedy!” I declared to our dog, who merely blinked and resumed his nap on the couch. “We need an oven repair and fast.” I dialed the number for “East Appliance Repair,” and a woman answered with “Good Afternoon, East Appliance.”
“My wall oven is refusing to bake! My cookies are in peril! I need a repair guy for my wall oven asap!”
The woman, obviously sent from God to save my cookies, replied by asking:
“Have you tried resetting the power to your wall oven at the circuit breaker?”
Somewhat embarrassed, I replied, “Ummm, no. What’s a circuit breaker? Do you mean the fuse box thingy?”
“Yes, that’s it! She replied.” Following up with, “Electric wall ovens that won’t heat sometimes need a simple reset at the house circuit breaker. AKA the fuse box thingy.”
“Try this. Go to the electrical panel / fuse thingy and try to find a switch that says “Wall oven. Turn it off and back on again. I will wait on hold.”
In awe of her patience and with the hope of cookies on the horizon I took off running like an olympian towards chasing Gold or in my case chocolate chip cookies. Lucky for me, it actually was labeled ‘oven.’ I turned the switch off and back on. I ran back upstairs and set “old faithful” to bake 350. I grabbed the phone and told her that I reset the breaker and now I am waiting to see if it will heat up. I explained to the incredibly helpful woman waiting patiently on the phone “if this works she will be getting some cookies sent her way.”
And then it happened…. My oven was heating again.
I probably thanked that woman 200 times on the phone prior to hanging up the phone. Really, I couldn’t be more grateful to learn my wall oven was not fully out for the count……
Like the old saying goes “The more you know = the more cookies you enjoy” or something like that…. 🙂
We hope you enjoyed this mostly fictional blog post.
The truth is we’ve been able to help quite a few people over the phone in very similar way to the story you just read. Electric circuit breakers at times can be reset and solve many simple issues.
